Medical Marijuana Now Comes in a Patch

For medical marijuana patients treating persistent conditions like pain, glaucoma, joint disorders, epilepsy, and PTSD, it can be difficult to maintain a constant level of relief. Smoking or vaping delivers nearly immediate effects, but they are relatively short lived. Edibles provide relief for longer periods, but they can also take an hour or more to kick in, and they deliver somewhat different effects as a result of their trip through the digestive tract.

    What is a transdermal patch?

A transdermal patch is a revolutionary new delivery system that you apply to your skin. These cannabis patches work just like a nicotine patch. Choose a part of the body where the skin is thin and veins are near the surface, like a wrist or ankle. The patch will deliver a slow and steady dose of medicine over several hours. Using a patch delivery system, patients can avoid any problems associated with smoking while receiving a reliably consistent dose of identified cannabinoids. Other types of alternate delivery systems, including a transmucosal patch that would be placed on the gums, are in development at institutions like the University of Mississippi.[2]

The transdermal patches were developed by Mary’s Medicinals, a Denver-based medical marijuana-focused company. Each cannabis patch Mary’s sells has a dosage of 10-20mg of cannabis. (The State of Colorado considers an edible dose of cannabis to be 5-10mg of THC; edibles and other infused products, including patches, may be sold in packages containing a total of up to 100mg of THC.) [2]

To make the patches, producers extract cannabis oil and isolate certain cannabinoids, such as CBD or THC, in a lab, for each different patch's blend. Each formula is then spread onto adhesive sheets and cut into small patches. Typical transdermal patches provide a controlled release of medication by embedding thin layers of medication, which warm and dissolve as the body heats them over time.

Are there different kinds of patches?

Mary’s makes six different patches, many of which do not contain THC and produce little or no psychoactivity. Each patch formulation emphasizes a different cannabinoid, mixed with terpenes derived from other natural plants such as lavender and citrus fruits,[3] which modify the effects on the endocannabinoid system in what has become known as the entourage effect.

    • Cannabidiol (CBD): this patch is non-psychoactive. In fact, CBD may counteract some symptoms which can be unpleasant side effects of high-THC cannabis, like anxiety and paranoia. This patch is recommended to treat inflammation, diabetes, cancer, mood disorders (such as PTSD and ADD), and neurodegenerative diseases. It also may help improve bone strength and promote healing
    • Tetrahydrocannabinolic Acid, or THCa, patch: THCa, an unheated (or “raw”) form of THC, is also non-psychoactive. THCa is also recommended for its anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic effects, non-drowsy pain relief, and potential cancer-fighting properties.
    • Cannabinol (CBN) patches: Made from aged THC, CBN retains a fraction of the psychoactivity of THC and frequently induces drowsiness. It also provides pain relief and is anti-inflammatory, so it is recommending as a sleep aid.

Patches that are combinations of CBD and THCa are also available, as well as two blends of fully psychoactive THC (one Indica-heavy, one Sativa-heavy) in a stronger (20mg) dose.

Mary’s Medicinals are available in Colorado and Washington dispensaries and will soon be available in California also. With additional states legalizing medical marijuana quickly, look forward to additional research into transdermal technology and exciting new products in this field.
